Level 3 Award in Education and Training

is an introductory, knowledge based teaching qualification which can be undertaken by individuals who are not yet in a teaching role (pre-service), or are currently teaching (in-service). However, there is a minimum requirement to take part in microteaching. Microteaching is an activity where trainee teachers prepare and deliver a short teaching and learning session to their peers and then evaluate their practice.

The qualification is suitable for individuals who:

  • are not yet in a teaching role (pre-service)
  • are in a teaching role, or who have just started a teaching role (in-service)
  • want a short qualification
  • have the potential to study at this level, which has the same level of demand as that of study for A-levels
  • want a qualification without a minimum teaching practice requirement
  • may have already achieved some Learning and Development units that can be brought forward into this teaching qualification (known as QCF equivalents).

Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training

Prepares trainee teachers to teach in a wide range of contexts. This qualification can meet the needs of arrange of trainee teachers, including:

  • individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification;
  • individuals who are currently teaching and training (including those who have just begun teaching and training) who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification;
  • individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification.

Learners must be willing to undertake an initial assessment of their skills in English, Mathematics and ICT, record their development needs, and follow an action plan.

Qualification Purpose

This qualification is suitable for individuals who want a qualification that focuses on practical teaching, and prefer a wide choice of optional units. Learners may already be teaching and wish to have their experience and practice accredited, or not presently teaching but capable of meeting the minimum teaching practice requirement of 30 hours.

Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (including Teaching English: Literacy)

Qualification Purpose This qualification is one pathway of the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training including a specialist pathway. It prepares trainee teachers to teach in a range of generic and specialist contexts. There is a significant practice requirement as these qualifications assess, and provide evidence of, competence when undertaking teaching and/or training responsibilities.

Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training can meet the needs a range of trainee teachers, including:

  • individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet both the generic and specialist practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification;
  • individuals who are currently teaching and training (including those who have just begun teaching and training) who can meet both the generic and specialist practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification;
  • individuals who have already achieved the standalone diploma in Teaching English: Literacy. These learners can transfer credit from the units they have already achieved as part of their standalone qualification.

Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (including Teaching English: Literacy) and other pathways of the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training including a specialist pathway are recognised as equivalent to Certificate of Education qualifications in the FHEQ.

Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

These qualifications provide learners with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to perform the role of an assessor.

1. Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment:

This qualification develops knowledge of the principles and practices of assessment without any requirement to practice as an assessor.

2. Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment

This qualification is intended for assessors who assess occupational competence in an individual’s work environment. It includes the following assessment methods (although not all of these require performance evidence):

  • observation of performance in the work environment;
  • examining products of work;
  • questioning the learner;
  • discussing with the learner;
  • use of others (witness testimony);
  • looking at learner statements; and
  • recognising prior learning.

3. Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement This qualification is intended for those who assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in a workshop, classroom or other training environment rather than assessing competence in a work environment. It includes the following assessment methods (although not all of these require performance evidence):

  • assessments of the learner in simulated environments;
  • skills tests;
  • oral and written questions;
  • assignments; ยท projects;
  • case studies; and
  • recognising prior learning.

4. Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

This qualification is intended for those who assess both occupational competence in the work environment and vocational skills, knowledge and understanding in a workshop, classroom or other training environment other than assessing competence in a work environment. There must be evidence to cover all of the assessment methods listed in the units.

Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

Provides learners with the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge and understanding to enable learners to perform the role of internal quality assurer.
